In Portugal, non-estuarine coastal habitats play an important role for two wintering waders that are not abundant in estuarine areas, Sanderling Calidris alba and Ruddy Turnstone
Arenaria interpres. These coastal areas also hold important numbers of two species that are common on estuaries, Kentish Plover Charadrius alexandrinus and Grey Plover Pluvialis squatarola. The Portuguese non-estuarine coast supports more than 1% of the estimated biogeographic populations of Kentish Plover, Sanderling and Ruddy Turnstone.
