The Non-Estuarine Coastal Waterbird Survey in Italy (Italy-NEWS) was conducted in parallel to routine International Waterbird Census activities in January 1998. A total of 513 km of coast was covered in addition to estuarine coast sections. Very low numbers of wintering waders were recorded. The absence of important tidal movements is believed to represent the main cause of the local rarity of wader species.
