Curlew Sandpipers occurred through most of the Baikal Lake region. They were much more abundant on southward than on northward migration, during which records were irregular and in small numbers. Southward migration was on a broad front; the passage of adults was in the second half of July and the first half of August, and of juveniles in the second half of August. Their presence and abundance were dependent primarily on feeding conditions; preferred habitats were mudflats on lake and river shores in steppe and forest-steppe landscapes.
They were most abundant in years when receding water levels created favourable habitat. Curlew Sandpipers on passage through Baikal Lake region are likely to be on passage to Indo-China and Australasia.
