Few studies of the vocalisations and sounds of shorebird embryos or young exist, yet the field offers rich research possibilities and insights into the acoustic communication associated with the often complex and diverse social biology of shorebirds. To date, no standard protocols are available regarding how to record vocalisations of embryos and young, although some potential pitfalls are readily avoided by using suitable methodology. Here, we present some simple protocols to assist researchers in obtaining good recordings of shorebird embryos and chicks, in the hope of encouraging more study of shorebird vocalisations, and to enable opportunistic recordings of vocalisations, for example when ringing shorebird chicks.
