Gerard Boere is remembered not only for his unrivalled scientific and professional achievements and visionary leadership, but also for his habitual twinkle in the eye, gentle kindness and modesty. His support for colleagues and nature, through tact and elegant diplomacy and long-lasting commitment to flyway conservation and international cooperation, is exceptional. The nature conservation community has lost a key champion and visionary: his legacy is an inspiration for generations to come. We miss him.
