Curlew Sandpipers Calidris ferruginea in Mozambique
The primary habitats of the Curlew Sandpiper in Mozambique, southeastern Africa, are coastal, mainly intertidal mudflats in bays and estuaries. Its distribution here shows a more coastal bias than in other southern African countries. The Bazaruto Archipelago, Bay of Maputo and Inhaca Island, Bay of Pomene and the Zambezi River Delta support more than 1,000 birds. Overall, Curlew Sandpipers are the most numerous shorebird in Mozambique during the nonbreeding season, with a total population estimated at 50,000 birds, although it is outnumbered by other species of wader at some localities.
