In 2020 we will have our annual conference on the isle of Sylt in the German Wadden Sea. The meeting will be the central event of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the IWSG.

Because of the global outbreak of Covid-19 it is currently extremely challenging to make reliable long-term plans. This may also affect our 2020 annual conference. ExCo is monitoring the situation closely and hence we will shift the opening of both the registration and submission of abstracts for the present until early May 2020. We will keep you up-to-date.
Please stay safe and healthy.

The conference venue is a five-minute walk from the shoreline.

The IWSG encourages the conference delegates to consider choosing the most environmentally friendly option when travelling to the meeting.

Although a small island, Sylt has a direct train connection from Hamburg (approx. 3hrs, hourly train services). You can book your ticket from your point of departure through to Westerland (Sylt) directly via this link or by visiting There are local buses from the train station to the conference venue. Details will follow soon.

For those who want to take their car to Germany but not onto the island: you can park your car close to a nearby train station. Visit e.g. parking 1 or parking 2 for options. The websites are in German only. Prices are around 5€ per day. There are, of course, other parking possibilities as well. You can then hop on a train to Sylt (regular services).

If you want to bring your car on to the island, you have two options: There are two companies that will bring you in your car to the island by train. Visit Autozug Sylt or Sylt Shuttle. Or you take the car ferry from the Danish island of Rømø.

The closest main airport is Hamburg, from where direct travel time to Sylt is ca. 4hrs with hourly train connections. Visit the link in the train section for schedules and tickets (fill in departure: Hamburg Airport). Also other more distant airports have train connections to Westerland/Sylt. Visit the link in the train section for schedules and tickets.

The island of Sylt has an airport as well, with connecting flights from Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich and Zurich. Search for destination Westerland Sylt (IATA Code: GWT).

#ISTC20 – 7 – 8 October 2020

We’re thrilled to be teaming up with the British Ornithologists’ Union (BOU) to jointly host the first ever International Shorebird Twitter Conference 2020, an online global event as part of the IWSG’s 50th anniversary and ahead of our anniversary conference in Germany 9 – 12 October 2020.

Twitter conferences are proving increasingly popular as a low carbon, cost-free and inclusive way for researchers from around the world to come together to share their research. Anyone can take part! From wherever you want! You can present and follow from your desk, sofa or on your commute!

The BOU are leaders in social media communication in ornithology, having previously hosted two successful general ornithology Twitter conferences and are sponsors of the World Seabird Twitter Conferences (#WSTC6 is in May).
